Melghat Mitra

Maitri is a Pune (India) based registered organisation formed by socially conscious citizens and believes in mobilizing people's support for people's issues. The organization focuses on primary health care, education and securing sustainable livelihoods.

The Problem:
  • Thousands of kids die every year in the tribal area of Melghat (Maharashtra, India) due to lack of medical attention and nutritional support.
  • Increased incidence and rapid spread of infectious diseases such as pneumonia, typhoid, and dysentery are primary cause of high child mortality
  • Situation worsens during monsoon when the food supplies are low and the communicable diseases are at their peak

The Solution:
  • Sankalpa teamed up with volunteers of Melghat Mitra, an initiative for eradicating child mortality from this region, in the Campaign Against Child Mortality
  • 7 cents buy daily nutritional supplies for a child, $3.75 buy daily supply of life-saving medicines for an entire village! Sankalpa provided funds totaling $2000 over last 3 years to help reduce the child mortality
  • The volunteers of Melghat Mitra ran special campaigns during monsoon and monitored the food and health situation in 6 villages. The malnourished and sick children were given necessary treatment and nutritious feeds, saving hundreds of lives during past few years
  • More volunteering and funds are needed to achieve the ultimate goal – Let us not let a single child die!
